How Vedic Maths Training Improves Mental Calculation Skills

Mental calculation skills hold the key and give a peer advantage to kids in today’s competitive world. Both in school as well as professional competitive exams, your child will have a special advantage if he is able to perform calculations mentally, without using paper or a pen. Let’s understand how Vedic Maths help in this.

Vedic Maths is an ancient Indian technique of solving maths questions via shortcuts, using amazing tricks. Most of these tricks do not even require paper or a pen and are so intuitive that kids can do it via mental maths or visualization.

Let us look at a few simple examples of solving Maths questions via Vedic Maths tricks

Vedic Math Trick 1 → Multiply any double digit number by 11

Example → 63 x 11

  • Step1 – In your mind simply place both the number 6 and 3 on the two corners
  • Step2 – Do the sum of both the numbers 6 and 3, which is equal to 9
  • Step3 – Position this sum 9 in between the two numbers
  • Step4 – Therefore, the answer is 6 9 3

Vedic Math Trick 2 →Multiply any number by 5

Example → 27 x 5

  • Step1 – 5 simple means diving 10 by 2, and this is the secret of this technique
  • Step2 – Multiple the number by 10, so the answer is 27 x 10 = 270
  • Step3 – Divide the result 270 by 2, the answer is 135

If you notice the above simple examples, even young kids of age 7-8 years can do all these steps mentally with ease and with superfast speed.

What are the different levels of Vedic Maths course?

Vedic Maths provides vast coverage and includes any topic you can think of including Trigonometry, Calculus etc. My son learned Vedic Maths until intermediate level from an upcoming academy Mathcruise and really enjoyed the whole experience. Mathcruise offer multiple courses for Vedic Maths as below:

  1. Vedic Maths for beginners – Anyone can enroll into this course without any pre-condition, Some people just do it for fun, some just for insight into what Vedic Math offers or how it works, and some students enroll into it during their summer or winter vacations. Here are some of the sample topics covered at beginner level
  • Multiplication by 11
  • Special Multiplication (multiply with 9 series, 99, 999 and so on)
  • Special Multiplication (multiply with 5, 25, 125 )
  • Miscellaneous Simple Methods (Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division)

2. Intermediate Level – Most people love Vedic Maths when they learn the amazing tricks at the beginner level and want to continue this further.  I have seen mostly the school going kids learning the intermediate level since this immensely helps them in their school Math topics, to do the calculations mentally and much faster. Moreover there are many interesting topics that are not taught in school maths, let’s look at these:

  • Magic squares
  • Dates and Calendar

Are you looking for Vedic Maths teacher Training course?

If yes, then you should speak to Mathcruise chief trainer who holds the advanced Vedic Maths certification from www.vedicmaths.org, and have defined a special course for teacher training with end to end support to launch your career as Vedic Maths teacher.

What is the right age to learn Vedic Maths?

You will find most schools admitting even younger students of age 6 or 7 years. But they can just learn one or two tricks since they will not even understand the basic concept of multiplication, division, or square roots etc.

The Mathcruise trainer provided us genuine counselling and suggested that the most suitable age for kids to start learning Vedic Maths is 11+ years, because by that time they have covered the foundation maths in school and understand the meaning of topics like arithmetic, algebra etc. This helps them relate to the vedic maths techniques, and most importantly they are able to use Vedic Maths in solving the questions of their school maths which makes them ahead of their peers, and generate more interest for Maths in them.

Closing Note

Vedic Mathematics is an excellent course, and I recommend that as a parent you must spend some time doing your own research. There is plenty of material available on the internet, and you can also go through detailed level wise curriculum at Mathcruise web portal, and also read through the various benefits Vedic Maths offers. The most important benefit in my mind is that Vedic Maths fosters Mental Math ability in kids which further boosts brain development and cognitive skills, and this is why it is also often called as Mental Maths.
