Most Umrah bookings go smoothly. The ones that do not usually fail for the same handful of reasons, and nearly all of them are avoidable with a little forethought. Having helped pilgrims across the UK travel in the holy month for years, we see the same mistakes come round every Ramadan.
Here are the errors worth knowing about before you pay a deposit, whether you are looking at Cheap Ramadan Umrah Packages or a five-star trip. Most cost money; a few can cost you the trip itself.

Comparing prices that are not comparable

This is the most common mistake of all. One package includes the visa, transfers, meals and ziyarat; another includes flights and a hotel and nothing else. Placed side by side, the second looks cheaper and is often more expensive once you have paid for everything separately. Before comparing any two quotes, write down exactly what each one covers. A package is only cheap if it is complete.

Judging hotel distance from a map

A hotel that appears close to the Haram on a map may involve an underpass, a hill, or a long detour around a closed road. Ask for the real walking time, not the distance in miles. During Ramadan, when you are fasting and making that journey several times a day, the difference between a five-minute and a twenty-minute walk shapes your entire trip.

Leaving the visa and permits too late

Ramadan is the busiest processing season of the year, and applications take considerably longer than usual. If you plan to Apply for Umrah visa arrangements yourself, start as soon as your booking is confirmed rather than a few weeks before departure. Just as importantly, remember that your visa alone does not grant access to the Haram: you also need an Umrah permit booked through the official Nusuk platform, and a separate permit for the Rawdah in Madinah.

Getting passport validity wrong

Your passport must generally be valid for at least six months from the date you arrive in Saudi Arabia, not from the date you apply. People miscalculate this every year and discover the problem far too late. Check every passport in your party, including children’s, as soon as you start planning.

Booking with an unlicensed operator

Saudi authorities have tightened requirements considerably, including verification of your accommodation, and have acted against operators who fail to comply. Booking with someone unlicensed can leave you with an invalid arrangement and no financial protection whatsoever. Always check for ATOL cover, and ask for the licence number. Ours is 12192.

Assuming the last ten nights are still available

Hotels near the Haram for the final ten nights are typically gone many months ahead. Pilgrims who begin planning six weeks out are often surprised to find that nothing close remains at any price. If Laylatul Qadr is your intention, treat four to six months ahead as a minimum, and earlier is better.

Overlooking the vaccination requirement

A meningococcal ACWY vaccination is required for pilgrims aged one and over, and it must be given at least ten days before arrival. This catches out those who book late or leave the health side to the final fortnight. Arrange it through your GP or a travel clinic as soon as your dates are set.

Underestimating what the fast demands

Some pilgrims plan a packed schedule and then find they have no energy for the night prayers. Ramadan in Makkah asks a great deal of you physically. Build rest into your days, particularly if you are travelling with children or older relatives, and do not feel obliged to climb every hill on the ziyarat tour while fasting.

Not getting the details in writing

Verbal assurances are worth very little when you are standing in a hotel lobby in Makkah. Get the hotel name, the room type, the meal arrangement, the transfer details and the ziyarat itinerary confirmed in writing before you pay. A reputable agent will provide this without hesitation. Reluctance to put things in writing is itself a warning sign.

A quick checklist before you pay

Run through these before committing to any package:

• Is the visa included, and are Nusuk permits explained?
• Is the hotel named, with a real walking time to the Haram?
• Are transfers and ziyarat included, or charged separately?
• Are meals included, and which ones?
• Is every passport valid for six months from arrival?
• Is the operator ATOL protected, and what is the licence number?
