In The Realm of Ruin, Carson Zan Hughes creates a world where exile changes everything. The story begins with people being sent away from the Holy Planets and left in a place they cannot easily escape. The Realm of Ruin is filled with monsters, strange lands, towns trying to survive, and people carrying lives they can no longer return to.
At the center of this world are Nyla Youngdew, Yevian Bonesmith, and Dice. Each enters the story with a different place in the realm. Nyla and Yevian arrive as new exiles. Dice is already a monster hunter who has spent years facing the dangers of the world around him.
Through these characters, Carson Zan Hughes shows a realm where every path can lead to danger, but where people can still find purpose, friendship, and a reason to keep moving forward.

A World Built on Exile
The Realm of Ruin is not a place people visit by choice. It is where people are sent when they are cast out from the Holy Planets. Nyla, Yevian, and Wilbur Woodstone are brought there after the council of the Four Realms declares their punishment.
Their sentence is permanent. They are confined to the Realm of Ruin for the rest of their lives. Their bloodlines are also bound to the realm. If they try to escape, they will be executed on sight.
A Dreamgate allows travel between planets, but Nyla and the others do not have one. The man who reads their sentence leaves through a Dreamgate, while they remain behind in the cold and unfamiliar land.
This moment gives the world created by Carson Zan Hughes its sense of distance and loss. The Realm of Ruin is not only dangerous because of monsters. It is dangerous because the people sent there must learn to survive without the lives they once knew.
Nyla Youngdew Enters the Unknown
Nyla Youngdew arrives in the Realm of Ruin quiet, watchful, and uncertain. She sees rocky ground, mist, and a jungle that begins beside barren land. The world does not feel normal, and she has no reason to believe she will be safe there.
Still, Nyla does not allow fear to control every choice she makes.
When soldiers from the Liemstall Dukedom find the exiles, Nyla travels with them to Liemstall. The town offers shelter and food, but it also introduces her to the enchanted masks. These masks can seal away a person’s memories, including their old name and the life they had before exile.
Nyla does not wear a mask.
Her choice shows that she wants to keep the memories that shaped her, even when those memories bring pain. Later, when Liemstall is attacked, she takes up her bow and joins the fight. Her actions lead her toward Dice’s monster-hunting guild, where she receives the new name Arrow.
For Carson Zan Hughes, Nyla’s journey shows how a person can enter a new world without forgetting who they were before.
Yevian Bonesmith Sees Adventure
Yevian Bonesmith is younger than Nyla and sees the Realm of Ruin in a different way. He understands that he has been banished, but he also looks toward the unknown with curiosity. While Wilbur is overwhelmed by exile and Nyla remains careful, Yevian speaks of adventure.
His view does not mean he ignores the danger. When Liemstall is attacked, he sees people fighting the rope monster and chooses to run toward the battle. He takes up a spear from a fallen guard and stands beside the defenders.
Yevian does not choose an enchanted mask either. He wants to face the new world as himself. After the battle, he joins Dice’s guild and receives the name Jester.
The character of Yevian gives Carson Zan Hughes’s world a sense of movement. Even in a place of exile, Yevian looks for a path ahead.
Dice and the Monster-Hunting Guild
Dice brings experience to the story. He leads a monster-hunting guild that includes Cloak, Frost, and Clip. The guild takes bounties, travels to towns, and faces creatures that ordinary guards cannot handle alone.
Dice trains the team, prepares for missions, and tries to keep the hunters alive. He also understands that the dangers of the Realm of Ruin are not always simple. Some creatures are physical monsters. Others are controlled by specters. Some threats require potions, fire, planning, and an Astral Blade.
During the attack on Liemstall, Dice leads the defense against the rope monster and the specter controlling it. Frost prepares the flammable mixture. Nyla uses fire with her bow. Once the monster’s body is destroyed, Dice uses an Astral Blade against the specter.
This shows the kind of dangerous world Carson Zan Hughes creates. No one person can face every threat alone. The hunters need different skills, trust, and the willingness to stand together.
A Dangerous World With New Beginnings
The Realm of Ruin contains monsters, Dreamgates, enchanted masks, towns, and hidden places such as El Dorado. It is a world where people can lose everything, but it is also where they can find a new purpose.
Nyla becomes Arrow. Yevian becomes Jester. Dice continues to lead his guild through a realm that never becomes easy or safe.
Carson Zan Hughes creates a world where danger is always close, but courage is close as well. The characters do not forget what they have lost. Instead, they carry their past with them as they face the unknown.
Through Nyla, Yevian, Dice, and the monster-hunting guild, Carson Zan Hughes shows that even in the Realm of Ruin, people can find others to stand beside and a reason to keep moving forward.
