In Ayurveda, asthma is commonly associated with the condition known as Tamaka Shwasa, which is mainly linked to an imbalance of Vata and Kapha doshas. Vata governs movement in the body, including the movement of air and the rhythm of breathing. Kapha is connected with mucus, heaviness, congestion, and stability. During emotional pressure, the body may tighten the chest muscles, increase the breathing rate, and make the breath shorter. This can make a person feel as if they are not getting enough air, even when the actual trigger is emotional tension. In asthma, this mind-breath connection becomes even more important because fear of breathlessness itself can create more anxiety. This cycle may make symptoms worse and reduce confidence in daily activities.

Ayurveda focuses on breaking this cycle by calming the nervous system, supporting the lungs, improving digestion, and reducing internal triggers. The treatment approach is usually personalized based on the person’s body constitution, asthma pattern, season, age, digestion, lifestyle, and emotional state. Breathing practices should always be done carefully, especially for people with active asthma symptoms. The aim is not to force the breath, but to create a slow, steady, and comfortable rhythm.

Therapies such as Abhyanga, Swedana, Nasya, and other personalized Ayurvedic treatments may be suggested to support respiratory wellness, reduce stiffness, clear channels, and improve overall balance. However, these therapies must be done only under expert supervision, especially for people with chronic asthma or severe breathing difficulty.
