Reading Price Tiers Across a Menu

Sort any dispensary’s vape section by price and it separates into three fairly clear bands. What distinguishes them is mostly extraction method and mostly not brand.

The bottom band: commodity distillate

Cheapest to produce, highest raw potency, least distinctive flavour. Wholesale distillate prices have fallen sharply in most markets as production capacity outran demand, and that compression lands here.

This band is where price competition is fiercest and differentiation weakest. A mr x cart or charge bar cart listing at the bottom of a menu is competing almost purely on price per gram.

The middle band: live resin and diamonds

More expensive input material, more involved processing, better flavour retention, usually slightly lower tested potency. This is where most of the volume sits in mature markets.

The spread within this band is wide, because it covers everything from lightly terpene-enhanced distillate to genuine fresh-frozen extract. A made cart or tru infusion cart listing here needs its extract type read carefully — the band contains several different products.

The top band: solventless

Rosin and hash rosin. Lower yields, better input material required, cold-chain handling, and a genuine production cost behind the price rather than positioning.

This is the one band where a higher price is structurally justified. Whether it is worth paying is taste; that the cost is real is not in question.

What does not explain price

Brand recognition, packaging quality and strain name. All three influence price and none of them describes the product. A well-known name in the middle band may cost more than a better product from an unknown producer in the same band.

The tax layer sits on top of all of it

Excise rates differ enormously by state and several states tax at multiple points in the chain. That compounds, and it means the same product sits in different absolute price ranges in different markets.

So bands are meaningful within a state and meaningless across state lines. A native sun cart or high wired cart price in one market tells you nothing about the same category elsewhere.

Using the bands

Decide which band you are shopping in first — that is a decision about extraction, not about money. Then compare on cost per gram inside it.
