Every winter produces a wave of reports that cartridges have stopped drawing properly and batteries have stopped lasting. Both are real, both are physics, and both are manageable.
Oil thickens
Cannabis extract is temperature-sensitive. As it cools it becomes markedly more viscous, and viscous oil moves through a wick more slowly.
The result is a starved coil: the element fires faster than oil can reach it, producing exactly the burnt taste people associate with a faulty cartridge. A cold mr x vape pen or cali-blaze vape pen setup will do this reliably and is not defective.
Batteries deliver less
Lithium-ion cells lose available capacity and output voltage in cold conditions. The chemistry slows, internal resistance rises, and the cell delivers less power to the coil.
So the two effects compound: thicker oil needs more heat exactly when the battery is able to supply less. A made battery or tru infusion battery that seemed fine in September will underperform in January without anything having failed.
What to do about it
Warm the device before use — pocket, inside jacket, hands. Body temperature is enough and takes a few minutes. Do not apply direct heat of any kind.
Then draw gently and give the coil time between pulls. Several short draws beat one long one, and that is truer in cold than at any other time.
Charging in the cold is the real hazard
Charging a lithium cell below freezing can cause lithium plating on the anode — permanent capacity loss and, in the worst case, an internal short. This is well established battery chemistry.
Let a cold device reach room temperature before plugging it in. This applies to a franklin fields vape pen, a native sun vape pen, a high wired vape pen or any other lithium device equally.
Do not leave devices in cars
Winter interiors get far colder than ambient overnight, and summer interiors get far hotter. Both extremes damage cells, and repeated cycling between them is worse than either alone.
This is the single most common cause of a battery that fails early, and it is entirely avoidable.
Storage over a cold season
Room temperature, upright, out of direct light. Do not store product in an unheated garage or shed over winter, and do not refrigerate — condensation on repeated warming is its own problem.
A charge bar vape pen, lunchbox vape pen or nugrun vape pen device stored indoors at partial charge will be in better condition in spring than one left in a cold outbuilding.
